To do and undo is making: race and the American Psychological Association
Abstract :
When it comes to psychology and race, our sins of commission have been typically observable and often very dramatic. In October 2021 the APA offered an official apology to the BIPOC community (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) for its support of structural racism. The pathologizing of BIPOC communities and their reactions has allowed Western psychology to further help construct race, and thus maintain the (Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic) WEIRD societies’ centrality. What then is the meaning of this belated apology? Is it an apology of omission or commission? Can it be both? If so, how? This presentation reviews the historical relation of psychology with race to argue that this “apology” further crystallized the social representations of race to maintain structured hierarchization so that whenever we invoke race, even if only to be challenged, it gets further reified.

En ce qui concerne la psychologie et la race, nos erreurs ont été typiquement observables et souvent très dramatiques. En octobre 2021, l’APA a présenté des excuses officielles à la communauté BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) pour son soutien au racisme structurel. La pathologisation/psychologisation des communautés BIPOC et de leurs réactions a permis à la psychologie occidentale de contribuer davantage à la construction de la race et de maintenir ainsi la centralité des sociétés WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich and democratic). Comment interpréter ces excuses tardives ? S’agit-il d’excuses par omission ou par commission ? Peuvent-elles être les deux à la fois ? Si oui, comment ? Cette présentation passera en revue la relation historique entre la psychologie et la race pour soutenir que ces « excuses » ont avant tout cristallisé les représentations sociales de la race afin de maintenir une hiérarchisation structurée, de sorte que chaque fois que nous invoquons la race, ne serait-ce que pour la remettre en question, elle est davantage réifiée.
